Tigers Open Indoor Track Season

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Amara Jones and Vernon Williams both brought home first place finishes as Savannah State opened their indoor track season by participating in the Christopher Newport Holiday Open at the CNU track inside the Freeman Center.

Jones won the women's 200m with a time of 25.24 while Williams won the men's 400m with a time of 49.97.

Jones was second in the women's 400m with a time of 58.35, Kendra Carter was third in the women's 55m with a run of 7.28 and Marcus Stallworth was third in the men's 55m hurdles with a time of 7.68..

In the 200m race, Mekela Martin (26.78) was 24th, Natasha Jackson (28.19) was 44th and Janesia Anderson (29.39) was 62nd. In the 400m, Aleah Hordges (1:01.20) was 14th, Latasha Wright (1:01.50) was 16th, Martin (1:02.73) was 24th, Raven Durant (1:05.73) was 41st and Anderson (1:09.58) was 50th.

In the long jump, Amber Hughes (5.21m) was 16th, Denisha Coleman (5.16m) was 18th, Sharonda Redfield (5.06m) was 22nd, Carter (5.00m) was 25th and Kiara Matthews (4.80) was 34th. In the triple jump, Redfield (11.38m) was 5th, Hughes (11.36m) was 6th, Carter (10.71m) was 11th, Matthews (10.44m) was 18th and Coleman (10.41m) was 19th. Britteny Dean finished 11th in the shot put with a throw of 11.26m.

For the SSU men, Eric Plump (22.44) was 4th in the 200m followed by Darrius Baker (22.80) who was 8th and Quentre Shannon (24.41) who was 46th. In the 400m race, Chazwyn Price (50.82) was 8th.

In the 800m, Etchien Assinzo (2:01.44) was 8th, Gabriel Davis (2:03.68) was 14th and Deshawn Lee (2;05.19) was 18th.

Ruben Isreal-McBee (17:06.88) was 21st in the 5000m and Shawn Sovnenir (13.47m) was 8th in the triple jump.
