2020 GHSA XC State Meet: 5A Girls Meet Preview

2019 5A Girls Race

On Saturday morning, if in attendance at Carrollton, one will perhaps witness the fastest Girls race up front in GHSA state meet history. Open up the detailed Virtual Meet link. It's going to be St. Pius X vs Blessed Trinity to decide the 5A team title as well as the MileSplit Georgia #1 All-Classes squad. Its almost time for the 'rubber match' as these squads have clashed at four meets this Fall. Both are Catholic schools, and surely some of these girls are friends. That is until they toe the starting line and await the firing of the start pistol. It may come down to which squad is the healthiest at 8:45 am Saturday.

Teams In Contention:

St. Pius X- The Golden Lions were the 2019 4A champs, and showed signs at Coach Wood that they are headed towards peaking at the right time once again. But, only five girls crossed the finish line in that team win... Their core 1-4 ran great, led by Mary Brady and Hannah Schemmel. Hopefully, their top 7 will be ready to roll at Carrollton Saturday morning. Both squads will need their 4-6 runners to bring their 'A' game at State.

Blessed Trinity- The Lady Titans were on fire early on, dominating at Bob Blastow, Starrs Mill AT&T Panther, and Asics. But, blew a tire at Coach Wood. Kelly Ann Sutterfield sprained an ankle and didn't finish and NXN finalist Hannah Miniutti has struggled with health issues much of the season. As mentioned above, the 4-6  runners could decide the outcome. It should be noted that Blessed Trinity sat their top 5 at the region meet and still won.

McIntosh- The Chiefs easily won 2-AAAAA and should finish a strong 3rd behind Blessed Trinity and St. Pius X. They have a season average time of 19:53 and a good pack from 1-5. Hannah Moore, Taylor Tarpley, and Emily McBride form a strong threesome.

Starrs Mill- The Panthers came out of region 2nd behind McIntosh and will be racing to get that final Team Podium position. Darby Olive and Allie Walker have been their top runners this season.

Union Grove- The Wolverines are very much in the mix to contend for a Team podium spot. They easily won their region meet, not having to push themselves too much. Leading the way at State' will be the Parsons sisters: Gabby and Bianca.

Grady- This is one squad that has always been difficult to gauge and sometimes does better at State' than projected. They rarely compete at big invites the likes of Asics and Coach Wood. The Knights won region 6-AAAAA with a team average of 20:45.

Kelly Ann Sutterfield (Blessed Trinity)- Sutterfield has enjoyed a stellar Fall and has only raced 5 times. She won at AT&T Panther and finished no higher than 4th in any race. She did not race at 7-AAA, resting up for State'. Her SB is 17:56 at Asics.

Hannah Schemmel (St. Pius X)- Schemmel has been a strong performer for the Golden Lions this Fall as their #2. The soph has a SB time of 18:04 achieved at Coach Wood and will be a factor at State'.

Katie Hamfeldt (Blessed Trinity)- Hamfeldt will be well-rested for State. She only raced 4 times this season and sat out the region meet. The junior killed it at Coach Wood posting an 18:15.

Hannah Miniutti (Blessed Trinity)- This was not the type of season Miniutti envisioned back in August. The 2019 NXN finalist has raced 3 times this season and none in September. She gutted it out at Asics and Coach Wood for her team. Her SB is 18:17 at Asics.

Rylee Evans (Woodland)- Evans won 5 races this season, including region 7-AAAAA and had a SB effort of 18:33 at Asics
