How long have you been coaching and at what schools?
I have been the Cross Country Coach at South Effingham High School since 2005.
Did you have running in your background?
I ran Cross Country and Track at Stone Mountain High School 1978-1981. Running was important to me, so I went to West Georgia College in 1981 and ran for two years. Running calms my soul.
What would you say is your overall coaching philosophy/motivation?
My philosophy/motivation: "summer miles bring fall smiles". You cannot avoid work. God has given everyone a body, and we need to treat and work that temple for our personal best.
What is your opinion about the state of XC/Track in Georgia right now? Any changes you'd like to see happen?
The State of Georgia does a great job. I would love to have more hills, but that is going to be impossible. We have to work with what we have around our areas.
How are you different now as a coach vs when you started?
When I first started coaching I was very strict; time has allowed me to relax. I have more confidence in my program, and my runners have confidence in me.
What are the things about coaching that you really enjoy?
I enjoy being a part of my runner’s personal bests. I have several running in College and I still keep in touch. Their victories make me smile.
I hate being right about injuries, but I enjoy the knowledge I have gained throughout my years.
