Olivia Powell is an 8th grader at Landmark Christian. She is the top hurdler in the state. Fairly new to the sport, Olivia has competed over the last 3 years. She's competed in travel dance for 5 years. Olivia was forced to take about a year off due to injury. The time away from track gave her the opportunity to get her mind right and transition into more quality training. Olivia also runs summer track with Drive Phase track club. On race day she likes to keep tracks on her playlist from artist like Lil Baby and others.
What events do you compete in?
I run the 100m/300m hurdles, 400m, and 4x400m relay.
What do you give up (sacrifice) to run track?
Going out with friends, staying up late, eating what I want, and watching tv.
What is your preparation to get ready for competition?
I always take off from practice the day before and take an ice bath. The morning of I eat a good breakfast that my dad prepares. He makes me pancakes and bacon.
What qualities do you gain from running track that you can apply to everyday life?
Confidence, discipline, a much better work ethic, and how to be very competitive.
Who inspires you and why?
Serena Williams and her parental influence. I can relate and she trains with the guys which I do a lot of.
How do you celebrate after a great win?
Go out for dinner with parents or go home to relax because I'm so tired.
Can you remember your first race? What was the experience like?
Yes, I ran the 400m at the Mark Trail invite. I remember not making it to the finals.
What do you like to do for fun?
I love shopping, like watching movies like Fast and Furious - "all of them". I love to eat too. I enjoy going to Zinburger at Lenox and eating their bacon fries.
What's one word that describes you?
What is your most memorable track experience?
My most memorable track experience was 2 years ago at the USATF JO's in Kansas. I remember making it really far even though I didn't take it seriously. The experience made me realize that track was something I wanted to pursue.
What do you like about track and field?
The family environment, teammates pushing each other at practices and meets. I like the challenge of pushing myself for a personal record.
Do feel any pressure going into the MS championships? What are your goals or expectations for this year's meet?
A little bit of pressure because I put in a lot work. I want to PR and win all of my events. My goal is to stay top seated in both hurdles.
