AA- This was a showdown that's been building perhaps since after XC season between Cross Country Champ Carl Ellis Corley and Everett Smulders of Lovett, who face-planted just before the finish line in the 1600 last year. Lap 1 was very pedestrian as an unkown commodity sprinted out early as usual getting a moment of glory. Ben Davies of Holy Innocents assumed lead very soon splitting a 1:09, dragging the field around with the contenders, which played right into Smulders' legs. On lap 2, 6-7 runners broke away from the 2nd tier group and stayed together until Corley slipped by Davies splitting lap 2 at 2:19. Someone took a wicked tumble 30m into lap 3, as Corley, Davies and Smulders began to gap the chase pack as they lost contact. Corley made a mild move with 600m to go, but Smulders jetted by Davies as well, looking very strong until the end of lap 3 speeding past Corley w/ a gun lap split of 3:23. It was all Everett the final lap, as he split a :59 winning the race by 20m at 4:22.49. Corley posted a 4:26.27 with Davies hanging around for Bronze at 4:30.39.
