EXPLOSION OF QUALITY MARKS IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS

With just over two months remaining until the U.S. Trials for the World Youth Championships, the meet is shaping up to be the best ever Youth championships ever held in the U.S. Competition for the 40 spots on the teams will be very close in most events based on performances to date and performances only figure to get better with state championships beginning this week. When the team was selected in 2011 a general guideline that was used was a demonstrated ability to make the finals at the World Youth Championships. That standard is much higher that the entry standards established by the IAAF.

Even so there were a significant number of athletes that met that standard and were not selected. After the original team was announced it was discovered that two athletes did not have their passports. They were replaced by three athletes (one was a bonus selection), who had not been named to the original team. They included distance runners Cami Chappus of Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, Ca.), Jacob Burcham of Cabell-Midland (Ona, W.V.)  and Brianna Narud of North Shore (Glen Head, N.Y.)  As it turned out all three athletes did made WYC finals. There were at least five additional athletes who had demonstrated finalist abilities that were not selected. The athletes who were selected to the team turned in outstanding performances—making 30 finals.

This year, at the end of the WYC, the most relevant question might not be ‘how may finalist did the U.S. have’ but how may potential finalists did the U.S. leave at home and why were they not named to the team? Surely it can’t be the quality of the athletes, with a benchmark of making a final, and you would thing that it is not too much to ask to send athletes to world championships that have demonstrated the ability to make finals. That being said, opportunities to represent your county in a world track championships do not come around very often—every year or so—and there is no guarantee that you will be in the same shape, in the future, as you are at this time. If an athlete has show the ability to make a world championship final, it is worth the effort to try and make the tea. There is no guarantee that this opportunity will present itself again.

The Mt. San Antonio Relays in the southern California suburb of Walnut was just one of a number of outstanding meets in the past two weeks. Leading the way individually was junior Randall Cunningham of Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nv.), who won the high jump with a personal best of 7-3, and freshman Courtney Currin of Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, Ca.), who won the long jump with a national freshman record of 20-11. Both marks are the leading Youth marks in the world. Ariana Washington of Poly (Long Beach, Ca.) won the 100 at 11.51 to rank just behind national Youth leader KY Westbrook of Chandler (Az.), who has run 11.47. In the 100 hurdles, Jasmyne Graham of Roosevelt (Corona, Ca.) and Kymber Payne of Poly both had personal bests of 13.80 in finishing second to Sasha Wallace of Castro Valley (Ca.), who ran a seasonal best and national-leading 13.43. Later Payne finished second in the 300 hurdles in 41.32 for the second fastest time in the nation. Ashlie Blake of Liberty (Henderson, Nv.) defeated Nia Britt of Alemany (Mission Hills, Ca.) in the shot put,

51-3 ½ to 49-0 ¼ in a battle between the two Youth throwers in the nation.

At the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kenzo Cotton of Papillion-La Vista (Papillion, Nb.) won the 100 in 10.69. Alexa Harmon-Thomas of Lawrence won the 100 hurdles in 14.30 and the high jump at 5-8. At the Oregon Relays in Eugene, Alexa Efraimson of Camas (Wa.) won the 800 in 2:09.34 with Tess Michaelson of Lincoln (Portland) second at 2:11.92. Elijah Armstrong of Pocatello (Id.) was second in the 1,500 at 3:56.91 and third in 3,000 at 8:35.86. Paige Rice of St. Mary’s Aecademy (Portland) was second in the girls 1,500 at 4:32.14.  Hannah Cunliffe of Federal Way (Wa.), running in open competition, was second in the 100 in 11.91 and the 200 at 24.11. Last week at the Taco Bell Classic in Columbia (S.C.) Xavier Atkins of Spruce Creek (Port Orange, Fl.) won the 200 with a slightly wind-aided 21.10 but had a legal best of 21.43 in the heats. Chantel Ray of Hampton (Va.) won the 100 hurdles in 14.08 and sophomore Nicole Green of Ponte Vedra (PV Beach, Fl.) took the high jump at 5-10.

Away from the more easily recognized relay and invitational events Marlon Humphrey of Hoover (Al.) turned in the most outstanding mark over the last two weeks in winning the 110 hurdles in 13.38 at the Mountain Brook Invitational to move into ninth on the all-time high school list. California’s boys showcased their 1,600 talents with Blake Haney of Stockdale (Bakersfield) winning the West Coast Relays at 4:10.39 and junior Corcoran of Villa Park defeating freshman Austin Tomagno of Brea-Olinda (Brea), 4:10.85 to 4:11.10, at the Orange County championships, where sophomore Kaitlyn Merritt of Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) won the pole vault at 13-4 before have close misses at 14-0. At the Central Coast Section Top 8 meet in San Jose Greta Wagner of Los Gatos won the vault at 13-2 and Marisa Kwiatkowski of Wilcox (Santa Clara) became the second triple jumper to better 40 feet legally with a 40-8½ effort,

U.S. Trials Qualifying Information

The United States is the six-time defending World Youth team champion. The first two finishers in each event at the U.S. Trials meet in Edwardsville (Il.), provided they have meet the IAAF World Youth championship qualifying standard, will be placed in a pool and the team will be selected from that pool. The 2011 U.S. World Youth team was made up of 41 athletes. The USATF has fixed the size of the 2013 team at 40, twenty of which are paid for by the IAAF...

The general guideline that has been used in selecting the team has been a demonstrated ability to advance to the finals of the World Youth Championships. Those standards are much higher than the entry standards set by the IAAF.  In 2011 about ten athletes who had demonstrated by performance the ability to make the WYC finals were not selected. With more than two months until the U.S. Trials it is very evident that between 50 and 55 athletes will have shown the ability not only to the WYC finals but also place well. If indeed this comes to pass, the question that will be asked is how can the United States hope to continue its predominance in the world if it denies its athletes the invaluable experiences that can only be gained in competition such as the WYC?

Perhaps the most important thing that athletes can do is to be sure to have a U.S. passport valid through 2013. You must have a passport with you when you participate in the U.S. World Youth trials. You will not be able to get a passport at the U.S. trials. Be sure to allow at least six weeks from the time that you apply for a passport until it is sent to you. You can apply for a passport through the Post Office. Getting a passport is a long-term investment. It is good for 10 years and there is every reason to believe that athletes with the talent to qualify for the World Youth Championships will have need of a passport in the next 10 years.

A special note concerning the following events: 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters and 2000-meter steeplechase. All athletes must have a mark in these specific events to that meet the IAAF standards for entry into the World Youth Championships. You can not substitute 1,600, mile, 3,200 or two-mile times to meet the IAAF standards. You can use times in those events to qualify for the U.S. World Youth Championships Trials in Edwardsville (Il.). In the 100, 200, 100-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles plus the long jump and the triple jump, qualifying marks must be accompanied by wind readings of 2.0 meters per second or less. It should be noted that the hurdle heights at the U.S. Trials will be the regular high school heights while the height at the WYC will be three inches shorter in the boys 110 and 400 hurdles and three inches shorter in the girls 100 hurdles. For the first time marks made at the U.S. Trials can be used to qualify for the World Youth Championships.
