Year 20!!  Quite a milestone.  It all started with the first “rubber” track at Spring Valley and a commitment by Coach Jones to make it a little bit better each year.  No doubt he does make it better each year.  What a palace Harry Parone stadium has become.  Combine Coach Jones’ desire to put on a meet that athletes will remember at a high school facility that is second to none and you end up with some pretty rich tradition.   - 2012-04-11 22:04:00

Marist's Girls are clearly on top of the 4A Girls Team Power Rankings thru week ending 3-18. They have one of the top distance runners in the State as well as the #1 ranked Girls High Jumper in the USA in senior Bailey Weiland (5-11) The War Eagles are a little distance heavy in the points, but well balanced.  Chamblee, Monroe-Albany and Shaw round out the top 4 spots. But keep an eye out for Eagle's Landing in the coming weeks... These rankings were calculated by scoring the rankings as a meet. We scored 12 deep for individuals and 12 deep for relays. For example, for individuals 1st place received 12 points for their team, on down to 1 point for 12th place.   - 2014-03-18 23:42:00

Can Lagrange give Marist a run for their money? We'll find out Saturday morning when they lineup and leave it all on the course. Cross country is a true team sport. Having one, two or even three front runners is important but so often championship races are won by the 4,5 runners. Can the Lagrange duo of Coggins and Bowie hang with the Marist duo of Thurston and Navarro? Of the top individual contenders, only Hakeem Mustafaa of Shaw has tested Carrollton this season rocking out a 16:33 at 'Ortho' nearly 8 weeks ago in hotter temps. - 2013-11-07 02:45:00

'South of the Border" Individuals Dominate Individual Races, North Gwinnett Gals and Smiths Station Boys Win Team Titles  It was an unusually hot morning down in Albany as temps hit the 80's before the MS races. It showed only 1 JV Boy barely slid under sub 18:  It was yet another great meet put on by Westover AD, Coach Harley Calhoun and his army of volunteers. Winning the Individual titles were Abby Booth from Perry HS in 18:35 and Shaw's Hakeem Mustafaa got some redemption this year winning the Boys overall title in 15:37 going out early and was never challenged. She broke Anna Bowles old record by 7 seconds and is only the 2nd girl to go sub 19 on that course!  Hakeem Mustafaa of Shaw HS (Columbus) ran to perhaps his best win of his HS career clocking a 16:11 holding of Jacksonville Bolles' Austin Decker for a :03 margin of victory. Mustafaa was recognized in pre-season outlooks as one of the best 4A runners with a realistic shot at defeating the Marist duo of Navarro and Thurston at State and he proved it at Nash Farms - 2013-09-21 23:28:00

  • Girls 4A State Meet Preview Article

Will this weekend be a repeat of Boys State in AAAA, where the balance of Marist overcomes the strengths of other teams? Morgan Ilse is the favorite in the 16 and 32. Her teammates Kamryn Brinson (throws) Catie Faust (800m) Kate Northrup (1600/800), Bailey Weiland (HJ) and their 4x400m relay team should garner enough points to put them in great position to win the team title and sweep 4A for the War Eagles. Carrollton, Fayette, Redan, Rutland and Shaw bring a stable full of athletes as well. Of this group, defending State Champ Redan, Rutland and Shaw seem to be the most equipped to join Marist on the Podium. However, no state meet preview is complete without mentioning Monroe-Albany. Never count them out...While their superstar has graduated, they bring a lot of talent and state meet experience to their home track with a raocous crowd urging them on.   - 2013-05-08 03:18:00

  • Scouting Report: Miami Sunset Boys Article

2012 was a year of history for the Miami Sunset boys cross country team. The team finished fourth last year lead by Nick Diaz and Kenny Castro who finished fifth and seventh respectively. The duo is back again this year for a Knight's squad that wants to continue to rewrite history. Coach Alex Shaw says his guys learned a lot from last year both good and bad, but feel the best is yet to come in 2013. Diaz, Castro, as well as senior Ronny Greenup, and junior Malik Gunter will be in the top four, with a huge battle between four to give guys for that fifth and final spot.  - 2013-08-20 09:29:00

Bennett squeaked into the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships in two weeks with his third-place 14.30 time Saturday, right on the regional qualifying standard for the 110 meter hurdles.        P.J. Bennett   Bennett was the only new qualifier in the meet from any team Saturday, but Demons' senior Daniel Yarbrough set a new personal record and improved his regional ranking with a second-place 172-8 discus throw, 18 inches better than his previous best.   Winner Jon Tipton of Sam Houston State uncorked a big 196-6 throw, also a season's best, that moved him from 12th to seventh nationally.   Three other competitors already qualified for the regional championships exceeded the regional standards but not their season's best marks Saturday.   In the men's 110 meter hurdles, perhaps the day's best race was won by the Demons' Michael Hill in 14.10 over Southern's Patrick Jones (14.14). Both have 13.95 season best times that rank 30th nationally.   Also topping the NCAA Regional standard in a winning performance was Sam Houston triple jumper Chris Gilchrist, winning with a  50-0 3/4 leap.   Hill said his time was bittersweet.   "If I had run that last week, I would have won at conference," he said, referring to a surprising third-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles final at the Southland Conference Championships.   Bennett became the 11th NCAA Mid-East Regional qualifier from Northwestern this spring.   He and Hill give NSU dual entries in three events. Yarbrough and Corey Jones have qualified in the discus, while Cody Fillinich and Jake Bray are in the regional javelin competition.   Also headed to the regional meet from Northwestern: Michael Green in the 400 meter dash, Jones in the shot put, Yarbrough in the hammer, DeJon Griffin in the women's hammer and the Demons' 4x400 meter relay team.   Athletes from McNeese, Stephen F. Austin, Texas State, Sam Houston State, Texas-Arlington, Southern, Jackson State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe and the Athletic Performance Improvement club team competed in the meet.         NSU NCAA Regional Qualifying Meet            Walter P. • 2008 Pre-Season XC Previews: Liberty District Article

While the Thomas Jefferson boys as district champions again can almost be a certainty, there is very few definites among the Liberty District girls on who will be this year's team and individual champions. Langley's Lauren Shaw won the district title in 2007 with a time of 18:22 as her time put her just two seconds ahead of Stone Bridge's Stephanie Paradis at 18:24. Both are back and neither slowed down in the track as Shaw ran a 5:11 for 1600 meters and qualified for state competition in the event. Photo by Ted Plunkett Paradis won a close race over Shaw for the district 1600 meter title with a time of 5:11 as well, but her success on the track really came in the 800 with a 2:15 season best and capping off her season with a third place finish in the 800 meter finals at the VHSL Group AAA State Meet. Other individuals who could mix it up with both Shaw and Paradis come from Thomas Jefferson's amazing rising sophomore class of runners which look to make the girls squad at TJ as possibly the team to look out for at the state level instead of their boys. Lisa Junta and Stephanie Marzen, sophomores at Thomas Jefferson, are the district's top returning 2 milers at 11:23 and 11:28. - 2008-08-10 17:14:00
