Did anyone else see Girma in the trials last night? He has done well and is now a citizen. He was not expected to make the team - was lacking the A standard- but what an experience.
Yeah, he was rockin a nice fro... He hung onto the train for about 1/2 the race(which should have been faster than he has been out in a 10k? About 14 flat at 5k) and faded... Being lapped on the final lap.
But I agree, excellent experience for him... Any news on anyone picking him up for sponsorship? He is still pretty young, and could become quite a talent in the professional world.
I think he'd have a bright future in the marathon if he wants to stick with it. I'd love to see a Georgian athlete be a contender on the national stage in road races. Seems like we only produce sprinters (but they're among the best!)
I seem to remember that, if Kenya had kept him, they thought he was a 12K runner - so the marathon may make sense. When he ran his great 10K for Auburn, he appeared to be standard sized for college 10K runners. However, in the trials, he looked tiny upside the other runners.
