Kell Boys score close win over Walton in Region 6-5A!

The boys from Kell pulled off a surprise win in Region 6-AAAAA as they upset Walton for the region title on Saturday in a battle that wasn't decided until the last event of the day. Kell went into the 4x400 ahead by 4 points but as their anchor took the baton, his team was in fifth place with Walton running in 2nd position, a spot that would give them the team title. Justin Chambers, the anchor for Kell, split a 47.74 to lead the team to 3rd place and assure the win for Kell. Kell athletes also took 1st in the long jump as DaQuann Simmons took home the gold. Sophomore Jonathan Trott captured 1st place in the high jump with a leap of 6'3". The 4x100 team from Kell will also be advancing to state. The team is comprised of DeAnthony White, Jonathan Dwyer, Eric Harris and Justin Chambers. Dwyer also took 1st in the 100 and 200 with Chambers taking 2nd in the 200 and 1st in the 400 for Kell to give the Longhorns the sweep in the sprint events.

Walton dominated the distance events as Jay Heller took home a tough fought victory in the 1600 as well as a win in the 3200. Teammate Corey Huner also advances to state with his 2nd place finish in the 1600m as well as the 800m. Drew Jones from Lassiter took top honors in the 800m with a time of 1:57.97 to break up the Walton sweep of the distance events. Mr. Heller will be a busy man at state as he also ran a leg on the 4x400 team that finished 2nd, also advancing to state.
