Cobb County Day One produces 53 elite performances!

A cold and windy day at the Cobb County Championships did not prevent the stars from shining as 53 elite performances were turned in. The much anticipated match up between Ben Hubers of McEachern and Jay Heller of Walton saw Hubers lead from the gun to hold off Hellers 4:17.32 to 4:18.05. Both runners broke the old county record set by Ben Hubers last year. Miles Svoboda of Pope was able to hold off Brian Potts of McEachern for 3rd place by a mere 7 tenths of a second. The girl's 1600m was quite a different story as 6 girls exchanged the lead over the course of the first 3 laps. Taylor Adams of Sprayberry pulled away and was able to hold off Lindsey Pickens of Kennesaw Mountain, winning in 5:22.74.

The boys shot put provided a surprise as unheralded Joe Chisholm, of McEachern, used a person best throw of 50'7.5" to hold off David Schiedt of Lassiter. In the girls shot put, two of the top throwers in the state, Kristin Smith of Sprayberry and Lauren Chambers of Kell, finished 1-2 as Smith used a toss of 43'1" to take the win over the freshman Chambers who managed a 39'9" effort.

In other field event action, Zandi Debowles of Pope won with a jump of 17'6.5" over LaCreysha Styles of McEachern, who managed a 17'2" effort despite the windy conditions. Trey Charles, of Marietta, was only able to manage a 21'1" effort in the gusty wind but still managed to take the win over Brian Sutherland of Campbell in 20'3". The triple jump saw Saskia Kalmeijer, of Pope, win big with a leap of 37'1.25". JT Tiller, of Wheeler, captured the boys crown in the event with a 46' effort.

Action will resume on Monday with the finals in the running events and the 3200m.
