PRINCETON, N.J. - With
snow on the ground as a winter-like storm moved its way up the east coast,
senior Ethan Shaw (Falmouth, Maine) put his name in the history books Saturday
morning as he won the individual title at the Heps Championships hosted by
Princeton at West Windsor Fields.
In an extremely exciting race,
Shaw tracked down Columbia's Kyle Merber, passing him in the final few meters
to take the win by one-hundredth of a second. Officially, Shaw's time was
24:47.6, while Merber was credited with a second-place time of 24:47.7.
The first-place finish was the
first for a Dartmouth runner since Ben True won in Van Cortlandt Park in 2008
in 23:59.6.
Shaw's finish earned his team
one point in the standings and helped them to a third-place showing with 79
team points.
Senior Brad Kenimer (Alexandria,
Va.) was the second Big Green runner to finish as he placed 16th overall in
25:28.7. Kenimer's time narrowly edged out teammate, sophomore John Bleday (Westwood,
Mass.) in 25:28.8 for 17th place.
Sophomore Steve Mangan (Honeoye
Falls, N.Y.) placed 21st in 25:32.0, while the final Big Green runner to place
in the scoring for his team was junior Jonathan Gault (Bedford, Mass.) in 24th.
Gault's time of 25:35.0 also rounded out the grouping of four Dartmouth runners
to finish in a seven-second window.
Sophomore Henry Sterling (South
Freeport, Maine) was 43rd in 26:02.8, while the team's lone freshman running on
the day, Dylan O'Sullivan (Harrowsmith, Ontario) placed 49th in 26:11.7.
Princeton won the event for the
second-straight year and the fifth time in the last six years. Dartmouth has
now placed third of higher in the last three Heps Championships and other than
Columbia is the only team other than Princeton to win an Ivy League title since
2005.
