MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Syracuse University track & field team began the outdoor season in dominating fashion as two Orange finished in first and second place in the decathlon and heptathlon in the largest track meet on the east coast this weekend. Syracuse was one of a record field of 38 universities and 1,280 athletes at Doug Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach.
Junior Evan Stivala won the event crown in the decathlon with a BIG EAST qualifying score of 6,004 points, which was attributed to his first-place finish in the high jump (1.94m), 400-meter dash (52.28) and pole vault (3.85m). On the flip side, junior Kelsey Rubeor's throw of 11.97m in the shot put and 40.70m in the javelin led her to a second place finish out of 24 competitors in the heptathlon. Rubeor finished with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying score of 4,644 points. Freshman Frank Taylor tied for fourth place in the decathlon with a score of 5,408.
Senior Annabelle Pellerin and junior Kwaku Boah represented the Orange outside of the multi-events. Pellerin tied for second in the high jump with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying leap of 1.70m (5'7), while Boah finished 23rd in the weight throw with a mark of 45.34m.
The Orange continues its outdoor season when it travels to the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. on Friday, March 26 and Saturday, March 27.
