Class A Public State Meet Preview

BOYS

It looks likely that A Pub Boys are going to have a new team champion come Saturday. Montgomery County will be aiming for their first GHSA Track championship (after finishing 2nd in 2017) and appear to be the favorite after Sectionals after viewing the Virtual Meet.

Clayton Harvey of Montgomery County

Leading the Eagles for the past 2 seasons is Senior, Clayton Harvey. Harvey, is a threat to triple in the 200m, 400m and LJ, leading all 3 events in the class this season. Montgomery is very balanced and threats to score 10 points or more in the throws, relays and hurdles as well.

Trendarius Henderson of Turner County

Chasing the Eagles should be Turner County, who are led by triple threat Trendarius Henderson in the hurdles and jumps and Jatavion Boone (has the fastest times this season in the 110 & 300 hurdles. Turner's 4x400 squad has the top time this season as well.

Commerce (2013 and 2016 champs) pack a punch in the distance events with Brandon Morris and JJ Chestnut and in the Vault with Tucker Flint and Greyson Burke. Gordon Lee is a podium threat due to their distance prowess, including: Jasper Wilson, Ian Godwin and Jake Lee. Other teams with a fighting chance of making the top 4 are Pelham, Macon County and 2017 champ Hancock Central.

Benjamin Okafor of Elite Scholars Academy

Fans need to visit the TJ competition as Benjamin Okafor has a pr of 48-6.25, not to mention a LJ pr of 23-3.50 going head to head with Harvey from Montgomery Co. Nathaniel Oliver from Macon County has a nice pr of 159-5 in the Discus.

The Girls team competition comes down to basically 4 schools if they perform well in Albany. Gordon Lee (who may be making the longest trip of any school all classes- 291 miles one way) is very strong in the distance events, led by state champion Gracie O'Neal in the 800 & 1600. The Lady Trojans (traditionally strong in the Pole Vault) stand to score 18 points behind Kaylee Brown and Madison Mayberry. Brown also is a threat to win the HJ with a pr of 5-4.

Brandy Mackey of Telfair County

Telfair County (2017 champs) could make this a 'Battle of the Trojans' (what a coincidence, lol) and the only school that may push Gordon Lee. They have speedy relay squads and sprinter/jumpers with Brandy Mackey (200 & LJ) and NyAsia Reed (400 & TJ) (who also are threats and potential to score well in the 300 hurdles with Kendasia Swinson.

Greene County has the talent to score big points with their speed. Erien Jones has a chance to double in the 100/200m races. Jamiya Mitchell and Destiny Long may score big points in the 400m and their relay squads have the potential to do the same.

Tycoriah Danner of Washington-Wilkes

Pelham and Washington-Wilkes are both Podium contenders. Pelham could do very well in the Jumps, Sprints and Throws. Washington-Wilkes should do well in the speed events with Tycoriah Danner being ranked #1 in the 100m dash.

Ansley Whitley of Marion County
Other athletes to watch are Marion County throwers Ansley and Ashley Whitley.
