Weekend Recap: Thompson, Sobota Set Nation Bests

Over the weekend, a couple of Tennessee athletes set some sensational marks in two different disciplines.

There weren't any indoor meets in the state on Saturday, but there were lots of opportunities elsewhere in the Southeast.

Here are some of the highlights of the weekend.

Scott Thompson US No. 1 800m

Another Brentwood distance runner has a US No. 1.

Stop me if you've heard that before.

Scott Thompson stayed in Nashville to race collegiate athletes in the 800m at Vanderbilt. He came out with a new personal best and a US No. 1 time of 1:53.18.

Thompson has had a busy indoor season. He's got the No. 2 Mile time in the state, 4:10, which he ran at the Millrose Games. That's a nationally elite time as well.

Joshua Sobota US No. 1 Shot Put

Sobota is one of the top throwers in the country to start the season. And over the weekend in Atlanta, the Bearden senior threw 67-3.25.

That's not only the best mark in the country, but it's not really close to the next best thrower. Sobota has nearly a three foot advantage on the rest of the United States.

Sobota finished third at New Balance Outdoors last season when he threw 65-11. This weekend was his first time over 66 feet. And he went way over that barrier.

He'll have a decent shot at a national title to finish off his already impressive indoor season.

Beth Donnelly US No. 10 3000m

Donnelly continued her impressive sophomore season in Nashville as well, running an excellent time in the 3000.

Donnelly ran 9:56 for 3k, which is a top ten time nationally.

The Brentwood sophomore already has the top mile time in the state. She's the only girl below five minutes so far this season in the state of Tennessee.

Alex Swindle TN No. 1 Pole Vault

There's a new leader for the girls pole vault in the state of Tennessee.

Brentwood Academy junior Alex Swindle took over the top spot with a 12-0 performance at the Indiana Open.

Competing for Kindersport, Swindle demolished her personal best of 10-2. That mark got her fourth at the indoor state title last season.

We're expecting a close competition between her and Anderson County's Brittany Bishop, should they both decide to compete in the state title later this month.

There are a few top marks that have gone up after this weekend's competitions. You can check those out HERE in our full leaderboard of top times and marks in the state.

The Kentucky High School Invite is this weekend, so many of those marks may change soon.
