Southwest Dekalb Runs 40.55 And Focuses On National Record

The sprint relay outdoor national rankings are being dominated by Southwest Dekalb! The Georgia squad impressively posted three US #1 times at the 5th Annual Lions Showcase this weekend. Their big early season start was highlighted by a 40.55 4x100m, which ranks 9th overall in the last four years and 18th from the past decade. MileSplit talked to team leader Terry Conwell after the race.

Post Race Q&A With SW-D Sprinter Terry Conwell

MileSplit: The Southwest Dekalb team posted a lot of fast relays in 2015 and you've beaten all of them already this year. Was it a surprise to be hitting these times so early in the season?

Terry: No, it wasn't a surprise that we are hitting those times because we work hard each and every day so when the meet comes, we prove that our hard work is paying off.

A 40.55 alone is impressive. You guys hit that 1:243:14, and all US #1 times this weekend at the same meet. Going into the Lions Showcase, was it the goal for your team to chase those time in all three events?

It was our goal to come into the Lion Showcase as a team not just individuals so we focused on our relays.

What's it like training and running with your brother? Does the bond between you guys help motivate you on race day?

Training with my brother really is motivation because we push each other when we need it the most .

What are your individual goals for the 2016 outdoor season? What are the big races and times you're going after?

My individual times this year are 45.8 for the 400m, 20.6 for the 200m & 10.4 for the 100m.

What were your team goals at the start of the season, and have these times so early changed your expectations for 2016?

Our goal is to break the national record in the 4x4 & 4x1 .
