Texas Southern Wins Men's Indoor Championship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The 2015 Southwestern Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship was awarded to the Tigers of Texas Southern University Sunday afternoon at the Birmingham Crossplex. TSU ended the day with a total of 128 points. This marks their seventh victory in the league championships.
Clyde Duncan from Texas Southern University was presented the 2015 Men's Indoor Coach of the Year award.
Grambling State Tigers placed second with 124 points. Prairie View finished third with 85 points. Rounding out the final standings include: Mississippi Valley (64), Alabama State (62), Jackson State (57), Southern (29), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (29), Alcorn State (21) and Alabama A&M (18).
Demetrious Williams was awarded the 2015 Men's Most Outstanding Field Performer. He claimed two victories in long jump with a leap of 7.20m and in Triple Jump with a length of 15.21m. Jackson State's Tamarick Johnson was granted the 2015 Men's Most Outstanding Track Performer. He placed first in the 60m dash with a time of 6:83 and 400m dash, running a time of 47.91.
WEIGHT THROW
Winning the 2015 SWAC title in weight throw was Mississippi Valley's Micah Hill with a distance of 17.98m (59-00.00). Grambling State's Wade Julien came in second place with a throw of 15.19m (49-10.00) and David Young placed third with a distance of 15.07m (49-055.50).
POLE VAULT
Jawalyn Brooks set a new SWAC record for men's pole vault, jumping a height of 4.65m (15-03.00). Alabama State's Christopher Amisial and O'Shane Shaw placed second and third with heights of 3.85m (12-07.50) and 3.75m (12-03.50), respectively.
TRIPLE JUMP
Demetrious Williams came in first place in triple jump with a leap of 15.21m (49-11.00). Second place was captured by Grambling State's Chauncey Wells with a jump of 14.76m (48-05.00) and third place was awarded to Southern's Akil Bennett with a leap of 14.72m (48-03.50).
60M HURDLES
Prairie View's Michael Prejean finished in first place with a time of 7.94 in the 60m hurdles. He was close to the SWAC record from 2005 of 7.91. Finishing second was Alabama A&M's Donte' McDaniel with a time of 8.03 and placing third was Grambling State's Darrius Davis with a time of 8.08.
60M
Jackson State's Tamarick Johnson was crowned the 2015 SWAC champion for the 60m dash with a time of 6.83. Coming in second place was Prairie View's Keon Campbell, running a time of 6.85. Finishing in the third spot was Mississippi Valley's Deion Reid with a time of 6.86.
MILE
Texas Southern's D'Andre Lewis claimed the 1600m SWAC title with a new record time of 4:18.71. Coming in second was Arkansas-Pine Bluff's Matthew Agard with a time of 4:26.20 and finishing in third place was Mississippi Valley's Simeyon Bobbett, running a time of 4:27.19.
400M
Jackson State's Tamarick Johnson received another SWAC title placing first in the 400m dash with time of 47.91. Coming in second was Alabama State's Devin O'Neal, running a time of 48.49. Jackson State's William Carroll finished third with a time of 48.95.
800M
Sorone Batiste from Prairie View A&M was crowned SWAC Champ for the men 800m run with a time of 1:52.63. He currently holds the SWAC record from 2013 with a time of 1:52.39. Grambling State's Darius Taylor placed second with a time of 1:53.71. Finishing third was Southern's John Haynes, running a time of 1:54.00.
200M
Grambling State's Jamael McTear clocked in at 21.32 winning the 200m SWAC title. Finishing in second and third place was Jackson State's Tamarick Johnson and Mississippi Valley's Eric Chism with times of 21.37 and 21.39, respectively.
5000M
Syed Hussain of Prairie View A&M captured first place in the 5k meter run with a time of 16:05.51. Coming in second place was Grambling State's Jesus Hernandez with a time of 16:08.98. Finishing third was Texas Southern's Jose Medina clocking in with a time of 16:10.10.
4x400M RELAY
Grambling State University (Lachavius Grimes, Montieco Harris, Darius Taylor and Jamael Mc Tear) was awarded the SWAC title for the 1600m relay, clocking in at a time of 3:15.70. Second place winner was awarded to Alabama State University with a time of 3:16.87 and finishing third was Arkansas-Pine Bluff with a time of 3:16.97.
