Cedar Shoals slips by Athens Christian in Clarke/Oconee track meet

It came down to the 4x400 relay.

Cedar Shoals slipped by Athens Christian in the final race of Thursday's Clarke/Oconee area track meet at North Oconee to capture the boys area title.

"When it comes down to the 4x400 meter relay, that's the way every track meet should end," Cedar Shoals coach Roger Edmonds said. "Our guys are conditioned. They want to run that event."

Cedar Shoals' A team finished in 3:29.84. Athens Christian's A team finished in 3:30.57.

Cedar Shoals won five events and finished with 159 points. Athens Christian won three and finished with 155.

"It was a prize fight," Edmonds said. "It was two championship programs that went to head-to-head and it's really a shame somebody had to come in second."

Athens Christian's Levi Cummings won the pole vault and took second in the 300 hurdles. The pole vault event kept him from competing in the 110 hurdles. Cedar Shoals' Rogerous Swain and Breshawrd Cooper tied for high-points honors with 25 apiece. Both ran in the final 4x400 relay.

"It feels pretty good," said Cooper, who won the 200 and 400 and ran in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. "We did pretty good holding the team together... I think it's a pretty good award and it helped the team out a lot. That's what matters, the team."

Cedar Shoals also won the girls 4x400 relay, but finished behind Athens Christian for the team title. Athens Christian finished with 128 points. Cedar Shoals had 125.

"We just know that this is the last race and it's the one that's going to be the winner," said Ashli Harper, who competed on both relay teams.

Athens Christian's Gabby Cortese won the 1,600 and 3,200.

"She had a great meet," Athens Christian coach Tim Cummings said. "She's so tough."
